Body Composition
Definition
The proportion of fat, muscle, bone, and water in the human body, providing a more comprehensive measure of health than weight alone.
Body composition refers to the breakdown of the body into its core components: fat mass, lean muscle mass, bone density, and water. Unlike body weight, which treats all mass equally, body composition analysis reveals the quality of weight, distinguishing between metabolically active muscle tissue and stored body fat.
Several methods exist for measuring body composition. DEXA scans are considered the gold standard, using low-dose X-rays to differentiate between bone, lean tissue, and fat. Bioelectrical impedance analysis uses electrical signals and is available in many smart scales. Skinfold calipers measure subcutaneous fat at specific sites. Each method has different accuracy levels and cost considerations.
Tracking body composition rather than weight alone is important because two people at the same weight can have dramatically different health profiles. A muscular athlete at 180 pounds with 12% body fat is metabolically healthier than a sedentary person at 180 pounds with 35% body fat. Improving body composition through resistance training and proper nutrition reduces the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
