A calorie surplus occurs when you eat more calories than your body expends. While an unintentional surplus leads to fat gain, a controlled surplus combined with resistance training is the foundation of muscle building or bulking.

For lean muscle gain, a moderate surplus of 250 to 500 calories per day above your TDEE is recommended. This provides enough energy for muscle protein synthesis without excessive fat accumulation. Larger surpluses lead to faster weight gain but with a higher proportion of fat.

During a bulking phase, protein intake should be at least 0.7 to 1 gram per pound of body weight to support muscle growth. The quality of your surplus matters: prioritize whole foods, lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats over processed junk food to optimize body composition.
