Resting Metabolic Rate is the energy your body expends while at rest in a comfortable, non-fasting state. It includes BMR plus the energy needed for daily non-exercise activities like sitting, standing, and light movement. RMR is typically 10-20% higher than BMR.

RMR is more practical to measure than BMR because it does not require the strict conditions (12-hour fast, complete darkness and quiet) needed for BMR measurement. For most practical purposes, RMR and BMR can be used interchangeably when calculating calorie needs.

Factors that increase RMR include higher muscle mass, younger age, male sex, higher body weight, and certain hormonal conditions like hyperthyroidism. Strategies to boost RMR include strength training to build muscle, eating adequate protein, staying hydrated, and getting sufficient sleep.
