Chemical Safety Guidelines
  • !!NEVER mix chlorine with acid. Produces toxic chlorine gas.
  • !!Always add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals.
  • !!Wear gloves and eye protection when handling pool chemicals.
  • !!Add chemicals one at a time with at least 30 minutes between additions.
  • !!Store chemicals in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and each other.
  • !!Retest water 4-24 hours after adding chemicals before swimming.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should pool chemical levels be?

Ideal ranges: Free chlorine 1-3 ppm, pH 7.2-7.6, Total alkalinity 80-120 ppm, Cyanuric acid (CYA) 30-50 ppm. Test water 2-3 times per week during swimming season and after heavy rain or high bather load.

How much chlorine does my pool need?

To raise free chlorine by 1 ppm in a 20,000 gallon pool: add about 2.5 oz of calcium hypochlorite (granular shock) or 10 oz of liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite 12.5%). Always add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals.

How do I lower pool pH?

To lower pH by 0.2 points in a 15,000 gallon pool, add about 12-16 oz of muriatic acid or 1 lb of dry acid (sodium bisulfate). Always add acid to water slowly, with the pump running. Retest after 4 hours of circulation.
