Definition
The internet's hierarchical naming system that converts human-friendly domain names into machine-readable IP addresses to route web traffic correctly.
DNS functions as the internet's directory service, translating memorable domain names like google.com into the numerical IP addresses that computers use to locate each other on the network. Without DNS, you would need to memorize strings of numbers to visit any website, making the internet practically unusable.
The DNS resolution process involves a cascade of lookups across different server types. Your browser first checks local caches, then queries a recursive resolver which contacts root servers, top-level domain servers, and finally the authoritative name server for the requested domain. Despite this complexity, the entire process typically completes in under 50 milliseconds.
DNS management is critical for website operators who need to configure records for email delivery, domain verification, load balancing, and failover. Key record types include A records for IPv4 addresses, AAAA for IPv6, CNAME for domain aliases, MX for email routing, and TXT for verification and security policies like SPF and DKIM.
