Ketogenic Diet (Keto)
Definition
A very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet that shifts the body's primary fuel source from glucose to ketone bodies produced from stored fat.
The ketogenic diet drastically reduces carbohydrate intake (typically to 20-50 grams per day) and replaces it with fat, putting the body into a metabolic state called ketosis. In ketosis, the liver converts fat into ketone bodies, which become the primary energy source for the brain and body.
A standard keto diet typically consists of approximately 70-80% fat, 15-20% protein, and 5-10% carbohydrates. Foods emphasized include meats, fish, eggs, cheese, nuts, avocados, oils, and low-carb vegetables. Foods avoided include grains, sugar, fruit (except berries in moderation), starchy vegetables, and most processed foods.
Research shows the keto diet can be effective for weight loss, blood sugar management, and certain neurological conditions including epilepsy. However, it can be difficult to sustain long-term, may lack certain nutrients, and can cause side effects like the keto flu during the adaptation phase.
