Resting heart rate (RHR) is the number of times your heart beats per minute when you are completely at rest, ideally measured first thing in the morning before getting out of bed. A normal RHR for adults ranges from 60-100 bpm, though well-trained athletes often have rates of 40-60 bpm.

RHR is a simple but powerful indicator of cardiovascular fitness. A lower resting heart rate generally indicates a stronger, more efficient heart that pumps more blood per beat. Conversely, an elevated RHR may signal stress, dehydration, illness, or poor cardiovascular conditioning.

Regular aerobic exercise is the most effective way to lower your RHR. Other factors that improve RHR include adequate sleep, stress management, proper hydration, and avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol. Tracking your RHR over time provides valuable insight into your fitness progress and overall health trends.
