VO2 max (maximal oxygen uptake) measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during intense exercise. It is expressed in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min). Higher values indicate superior cardiovascular fitness and aerobic capacity.

Average VO2 max values for untrained adults range from 30-45 ml/kg/min, while elite endurance athletes can exceed 70-80 ml/kg/min. VO2 max declines approximately 10% per decade after age 30, but regular exercise can significantly slow this decline.

Improving VO2 max involves both high-intensity interval training and sustained aerobic exercise. Research shows VO2 max is one of the strongest predictors of longevity, with higher values associated with significantly reduced risk of all-cause mortality. Even modest improvements in VO2 max deliver substantial health benefits.
