Formula
Cumulative GPA = Sum of (Grade Points x Credit Hours) / Total Credit HoursCumulative GPA is the weighted average of all grades earned across all semesters of an academic program, calculated on a 4.0 scale in the United States. It provides a single number that summarizes a student's overall academic performance throughout their enrollment.
The calculation considers both the grade earned in each course and the number of credit hours. A student earning an A (4.0) in a 4-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit course would have a cumulative GPA of (16 + 9) / 7 = 3.57.
Cumulative GPA is used for graduation requirements, academic honors (Dean's List, Latin honors), graduate school admissions, scholarship eligibility, and some employer screening. Maintaining a strong cumulative GPA requires consistent performance, as recovering from early poor grades becomes mathematically difficult as more credits accumulate.
