Grade points are numerical equivalents of letter grades used to calculate grade point averages. The standard 4.0 scale assigns: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, D-=0.7, and F=0.0.

Some institutions use weighted grade points for advanced courses. AP and Honors classes may use a 5.0 scale where an A earns 5.0 points, recognizing the additional difficulty. This means students taking challenging courses can achieve weighted GPAs above 4.0.

Quality points are calculated by multiplying grade points by credit hours. A 4-credit course with a B grade earns 12 quality points (3.0 x 4). The sum of all quality points divided by total credit hours gives the GPA. Understanding this calculation helps students strategize about course loads and grade improvement.
