Academic honors encompass several forms of recognition for exceptional scholastic achievement. Honors programs offer enhanced curricula with smaller classes, research opportunities, and dedicated advising. Honors courses provide more rigorous versions of standard classes with additional depth and discussion.

Graduation honors, known as Latin honors, are awarded based on cumulative GPA: cum laude (with praise, typically 3.5+), magna cum laude (with great praise, typically 3.7+), and summa cum laude (with highest praise, typically 3.9+). Exact thresholds vary by institution.

Participating in honors programs and earning honors distinctions benefits students through enhanced academic preparation, stronger graduate school applications, scholarship opportunities, access to honors housing and facilities, and recognition of sustained academic commitment on transcripts and diplomas.
