The valedictorian is the student who achieves the highest cumulative GPA in their graduating class. This prestigious distinction traditionally includes the honor of delivering a farewell speech (from the Latin valedictio, meaning farewell) at the graduation ceremony.

Competition for valedictorian status can be intense, sometimes determined by hundredths of a GPA point. Some schools have moved to naming multiple valedictorians, using Latin honors instead, or eliminating class ranking altogether to reduce unhealthy academic pressure.

While earning valedictorian is an impressive achievement, its long-term career impact is modest compared to skills like leadership, communication, and perseverance. The habits that produce valedictorian-level performance, including discipline, time management, and intellectual curiosity, are what truly drive long-term success.
